First Church and Temple Beth El do Pulpit Exchange

On November 5th and 6th, First Church participated in a pulpit exchange with Temple Beth El in Fargo. Reverend Pettis preached at the synagogue on Saturday morning, and Rabbi Janeen Kobrinsky preached at First Church on Sunday morning.

This pulpit exchange is a way we are living out our commitment to interfaith dialogue and engagement. We look forward to more interaction and dialogue with people of different faiths, as we seek to understand God more fully, and serve God's people more faithfully.

2nd Annual Bible Sunday

Building on the tradition begun last year, the second annual "Bible Sunday" was held at First Church on May 6th.  As part of a larger celebration of our Christian Education program, the church presented age-appropriate Bibles to 14 our our children.

For some this was their first Bible.  For others, who had moved up in age group, this was their second.  Yet for each of them, this is an important gift that will help them learn about and experience their faith at home.

Thank you to our Christian Education Board for making this important ministry happen.

Shower of Stoles Project Visits First Church

The "Shower of Stoles" is a collection of over one thousand liturgical stoles (and other sacred items) representing the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people of faith whose gifts have been excluded from service because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. A portion of this collection (75 stoles) was displayed at First Church from April 22nd through April 29th.

A suggestion coming from our Adult Education Series on being an “Open and Affirming” congregation was to bring to the F-M area the “Shower of Stoles” Project. The Project bears witness to the huge loss of leadership that the Church has brought upon itself because of its own unjust policies. This project lines up closely with our congregation's decision to be "Open and Affirming," along with the spirit of our mission and vision statements.

First Church Celebrates F-M Pride 2012!

First Church, an Open & Affirming congregation and a sponsor of the 2012 Fargo-Moorhead Pride Celebration, celebrated F-M Pride August 11-12!

On Saturday, August 11th, the church had a booth at Pride in the Park, at Gooseberry Park in Moorhead. The event went from 12 to 5 p.m. Members of First Church passed out information, and spoke with people, spreading the word about First Church.

On Sunday, August 12th, the church hosted the Pride Interfaith Service, and later marched in the Pride Parade in downtown Fargo. The parade route moved through downtown Fargo. Wearing t-shirts made especially for the Pride activities, many members and friends of First Church marched and waved as we spread the news of God's love for ALL people, and the extravagent welcome we offer at First Church!

Vibrant Faith Ministries On September 22-23 (Saturday and Sunday), First Church hosted David Anderson of Vibrant Faith Ministries (VFM). David lead a workshop on Saturday the 22nd for the leaders and members of First Church exploring how we might more effectively connect the ministries of our church to our homes. Applying the principles of VFM, we will examine the faith formation ministries, as well as other ministries of our church to determine how to enhance and empower the spiritual growth of all members of our church community.

Then, on Sunday the 23rd, David shared a message during worship and lead a follow-up conversation with church leadership following Fellowship time at First Church.

Watch for how this new framework will be engaged here at First Church in the weeks and months to come.

Blessing of the Animals

On Sunday, October 7th, First Church hosted the first (or what we hope to be annual) Blessing of the Animals.

On a beautiful afternoon, pets and their owners gathered for a beautiful service of blessing, during which each animal received a personal blessing from the Pastor.  In addition, representatives from "For Luv of Dog" and "Cats Cradle" were present to share about their work in placing animals in loving homes.

New Members Welcomed!

On Sunday, May 12th, we welcomed new members to our First Church family! This is always a wonderful occasion in the life of our church, and we are so blessed to have a growing community of faith.

Look for pictures in the June edition of our church newsletter, "First Word."

WHAT'S COMING UP!

What's Happening this summer at First Church?

Summertime in Minnesota is a time of relaxation and renewal.  Here at First Church, there will be some special activities planned.  Here are the highlights of what you can expect in the coming months.

Summer Picnics and Worship Services
Three times this summer, we will gather on Wednesday evenings for a time of fellowship and spiritual renewal.  On June 19th, July 17th, and August 21st, starting at 6 p.m., we will host our annual summer picnics on the lawn on the north side of the church, the Celebration Garden.  The Board of Deacons will provide hotdogs (including vegetarian options), bunds, and drinks, and others are encouraged to bring a side or desert to share.

Then, following the picnics, at 7 p.m., an informal worship service will be held, offering a tie to sing and pray, and share time together as a community of faith with God.

Special Sunday Service at Gooseberry Park
On Sunday, July 14th, the congregation of First Church will gather for worship at the large shelter in Gooseberry Park in Moorhead.  The service will begin at the usual time (10 a.m.), and we will share in a sacred time of worship and reflection in the midst of God's creation.

Following the service, we will transition into an all-church picnic at the park.  We will bring the basics, but you are invited to bring special dishes to share, and enjoy the amenities of one of our beautiful, local parks.

Pastor Mark's Farewell Service
Sunday, July 21st will be Pastor Mark's farewell service at First Church.  As part of our regular worship service, we will do a "Litany of Farewell" for Pastor Mark, as we say our goodbyes following his time with us here in Moorhead.  We will continue our goodbyes during the fellowship hour after church.

Pilgrim Point Family Weekend
July 26-28 will be the First Church weekend at Pilgrim Point Camp!  A wonderful time was had by those who attended this camp last year on Lake Ida, and so we have signed up for another year.  The cost is a $10 registration fee, and $50 (adults) or $36 (children) for food.  (Scholarships are available.)  If you are interested in attending, please contact Hope Ray or the Church Office.   Also, if you are interested in a scholarship, contact the office.

We hope to see you in worship and at other fun activities throughout the summer!
